Bentley is a legend; their vehicles are more than cars. They are works of art, and the very name is tied to tradition. But that doesn’t mean that the brand is stagnant. In fact, they are poised to take a very big step into the future with the first Bentley electric car.
Bentley Hybrid: Step One
Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and CEO, says new models are “all about electrification.” There is a Bentley hybrid available, the Bentayga Hybrid, and the brand plans to release hybrid versions of every one of its models by 2025. This is an ambitious target – and one we cannot wait to see realized.
Bentley Electric Car: Step Two
The fully electric model, though, will likely forge its own path. Hallmark says, “We could take one of the existing nameplates, and that could be the first electric car, but we wouldn’t take an existing car and try to fit batteries into it, because there’s a compromise from a range and efficiency point of view.”
Rather, they prefer to create an electric model that is 100% Bentley and blends effortless power with a solid driving range. As part of Volkswagen group, Bentley may draw on its bank of architectures for its first electric vehicle. Head of Sales and Marketing, Chris Craft, says that while customers are interested in electric cars, it is imperative that their vehicle “uphold Bentley’s luxury ethos.”
It is unknown whether the Bentley electric car will feature a lithium ion battery or the emerging solid state battery technology. Expected to be available in a few years, solid state batteries deliver the same power as lithium ion but are approximately 30% lighter.
Another question: how many motors will the vehicle have? Most EVs use a single electric motor per axle. Two-wheel drive models have one, and all-wheel drive models use two. Bentley’s electric 19-foot EXP GT concept has an electric motor for each wheel (1100 pounds of combined torque!). While this is just a concept at this point, it may be an innovation Bentley is exploring for its first EV.
You do not hurry Bentley. They are not in a rush to introduce an electric vehicle and they choose to perfect every detail instead of rushing out a less than fully-formed model. We expect no less! What we are certain of is that the Bentley electric car will be both a first and a fitting continuation of the brand’s lineage. Contact Bentley Palm Beach Today.
