All-wheel steering has been getting quite a bit of press lately, and Bentley cars may all feature it in the near future. For now, though, the company is celebrating its 100th anniversary with all-wheel steering in the third generation Flying Spur.
What Is It?
All-wheel steering offers stability and agility like never before. Whether at cruising speeds or around town, the electronic system has the power to steer the rear wheels in the same direction as the front. This matters because it’s easier than ever to overtake or make a lane change with some security. Additionally, it offers better traction than many other systems. Drive power is given to the rear wheels in standard situations, so it feels like a typical sports sedan. When slips are detected, though, drive power moves to the front wheels as well, offering fully automatic all-wheel drive for added assurance.
Four Different Drive Modes
Drivers can actually select from four different drive modes on this vehicle. A rotary controller on the center console allows them to do so. Comfort, Sport, Bentley, and Custom are the four modes offered, and each means something completely different. Comfort is perhaps the most relaxed driving mode, and the one you’ll likely want to favor. Sport mode offers a sharper responses from the throttle and transmission, as well as stiffer suspension and reduced torque going to the front wheels. Bentley mode is what many consider the perfect setup for this car, and it offers a level of power somewhere between the other two. Custom mode, though, allows for some individuality, pushing you to choose the ideal setting to meet your needs when it comes to powertrain, suspension, and steering.
Bentley has always had much to offer drivers, and all-wheel steering is just another option in a line of innovations from this vehicle. Look for it to roll out across the entire family in the near future.
