This year, the world’s most refined automaker will celebrate its 100th birthday, and in true Bentley style, it will gift us with a special edition vehicle. Now, all Bentley models are special but this one promises to be even more inspiring.
100 Years of Bentley Automobiles
Bentley has teased a centenary model and speculation is that it will give a nod to the historic No. 9 “Blower,” of Le Mans 24 Hours fame. This is largely due to the number 9 which was spotted on the sleek black grille. The 4.4 liter No. 9 was reportedly a favorite of racing legend Sir Henry “Tim” Birkin. In 1930, this model did not win the grueling Le Mans (that title went to a larger 6.6 liter Bentley) – but it did complete the fastest lap around La Sarthe at 6 minutes and 38 seconds.
Birkin raced against a Mercedes-Benz SSK, driven by Rudolf Caracciola. He caught the Benz, but Caracciola maneuvered so he couldn’t overtake him on the track. Birkin didn’t let that stop him: he flew through the grass at 125 mph. The Bentley’s back tire threw a tread, but Birkin kept pushing it to complete that blazing fast lap. Eventually, the tire exploded and Birkin was forced to admit defeat. Well, not total defeat: he and his No. 9 did earn the admiration of auto fans across the world.
Fast, Good, Best
When the Bentley brand was founded, its goal was to build “a fast car, a good car, the best in its class.” We say the brand exceeded its own expectations at this point. Certainly the best in their class, Bentley automobiles are not just good. They’re not just great. All Bentley models are stunning. If the centenary model is released, we’re confident it will do Birkin and the No. 9 proud.
