It could easily be said that people who love cars really love cars – and in this case, someone loved a rare 1954 Bentley Continental enough to spend over a million dollars to buy it. But there’s more to this story than just noting that a Bentley went for so much money.
The 1954 Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback was originally commissioned by R. D. Weatherhall, a Welsh racer. Throughout the years, it managed to survive in a barn for the last 15 years of its life, doing nothing more than gathering dust. So when it was time to come back out into the light, originally the estimation was that it would sell for around $200,000. After all, while it may have been rare, it also needed a full restoration in order to bring it back to its former glory – and that wouldn’t exactly be cheap.
But the auction house grossly underestimated the desire held by some Bentley fans. With over 45 people placing bids via phone, internet, and bidders in the room, it seemed it might be anyone’s game. And then a British car collector made an offer no one else could – or thought to – match. For around $1,224,000 the collector took possession of the car and now faces the task of having it restored. But given the price of the car in its found condition, restored it could be worth much, much more. In fact, it might bump it up to over $1.5 million!
