The 2018 Bentley Bentayga boasts a twin-turbo V-8 at 542 horsepower. That’ll give you 568 lb-ft of torque even at 1960 rpm. This is an SUV with a beastly kick to it. That takes some reigns to get under control, but luckily Bentley hands them to you and seems to say, “Have fun.”

The Bentayga has a great ZF eight-speed transmission with smooth shifts. There’s no lag when shifting at speed, which the vast majority of SUVs still can’t honestly say. It can ramp up from zero to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and, if anything, the official Bentley estimates for acceleration are often a bit conservative. They’ve been found to be considerably faster by Car and Driver, but we’ll stick with the official time just to be safe.

Where this Bentayga really shows off is at speed, though. Acceleration to make cuts and hit gaps in traffic is superb. Careful attention to previous iterations has also resulted in a Bentayga that handles masterfully in bad weather. It’s already built strongly, and it’s carefully designed power and handling make it even more reliable in wind and rain.

This can further be improved with the carbon-ceramic brakes. These are the largest front brakes on any production car in the world. Their 10-piston calipers enable a phenomenal braking torque of 6,000 Nm. That makes the 2018 Bentley Bentayga a genuine safety investment. You can choose seat set-ups for four, five, or seven people with ample room left for storage, making it ideal no matter how many are in your family.

For those curious about how the V-8 sounds, we’ve got to say it’s an improvement on last year’s W-12. The V-8 has a throatier sound and feel. It brings the Bentayga together well and seems to complete the total driving experience.
